My Back Story
I remember well the years I stayed home with my four children. When the last one was two years old, I started my photography business. For 20 years I photographed weddings, and enjoyed shooting engagement and bridal portraits. My specialty, though, was family portraiture. Looking back, I sure wish I had known then what I do now.
During this time I also had a framing business, and did a lot of custom portraiture. I really liked what I did, and the money was good. After almost two decades, however, I felt it was time to do something different. And I did.
The next home business I ran was a nutritional consulting practice. It took me two or three years to receive my credentials, and get my business set up. I consulted with people in my home office or would travel to their homes. I met so many great people, learned a ton, and really enjoyed both the interactive and business sides of my practice. This went on for several years until I had a niggling feeling that it was time to shake things up again.
The Day My Life Changed
It was around this time, I was lucky enough to stumble upon an online review of Wealthy Affiliate. I’m a pretty skeptical person, and the thought had never remotely crossed my mind of becoming an affiliate marketer. To be perfectly honest, I had no idea what that even was.
The more I learned about Wealthy Affiliate’s online community for internet entrepreneurs, the more I liked what I learned. It felt right from the beginning, and I joined that same day WITH NO CREDIT CARD REQUIRED. This is one of the things that really sold me. Having to give my credit card information, for something that is supposedly free, is a total deal breaker, making me super suspicious of the company’s motives.
You really can join Wealthy Affiliate for free, get started with the certification course, and begin building your own website. The course walks you through the steps, and you’ll have the support of the community members. I have really enjoyed the collaboration. It’s helped me tremendously.
Before you begin building your own WordPress website, you’ll need to find a domain name based on your niche or area of interest. If these words are unfamiliar to you, read my review to get a better feel for what the certification course teaches, or click on any of the links in the paragraph, to read my post on that particular subject.
Before we move on, you can experiment with various domains here. It’s fun!
The Basics Of Affiliate Marketing
If you have no clue what affiliate marketing is, let me break it down for you:
- You choose a niche or target audience you’d like to market to. This niche could be yoga, essential oils, dog clothes, skincare, or crochet. Anything you have a passion for or are interested in is fair game.
- Next you choose a domain name for your website associated with your target market: mydogclothes.com, learnhowtocrochet.com, or yogaonthego.com. You get the picture. With Wealthy Affiliate you can have more than one website. I have four I’m working on.
- Now start building a website. It’s easier than you think, and the course walks you through the steps to customizing your site, writing content, and optimizing SEO.
- You’ll now begin writing content that solves a problem or enriches the lives of those you’re marketing to. You can also produce videos or tutorials. See my tutorial below.
- Within your content, you’ll add affiliate links. For instance, let’s say you sign up to be an affiliate for Amazon. You write a post on exercise because your niche is based on weight loss. You find running shoes, exercise bands, or workout wear on Amazon, and want to promote those products in your article. It’s simple to add affiliate links to a portion of your text.
- Now repeat this process, and over time, you’ll see more and more visitors coming to your site. When they click on one of your links, you make a commission. It’s a win-win for both you and the merchant you’re promoting.
Sorry if your head is swimming. It’s not as difficult as it sounds, and you’ll learn the skills you need to know via the course.

Now that we have that out of the way, I’d like to break down one of the questions I asked at the beginning of this post. Stay tuned for future posts where I’ll address the other three questions.
How To Make Money As A Stay-At-Home Mom
Here’s where it gets good. Wealthy Affiliate is a perfect fit for moms that stay at home. You can set your own hours, working on your business when you have extra time here and there. I realize each day will be different with kids due to their busy schedules, and all that is required of you. Time spent on your business will be hit or miss some days. That’s okay. Go in with your eyes wide open.
I remember well staying home with my kids, and the feelings of frustration I often felt. This was before I started my photography business. It’s not that I didn’t want to be at home and a full-time mother, it’s that I wanted something just for me, and a way to contribute to the household finances. I know many moms who have similar feelings. Motherhood is wonderful, but it’s hard, and sometimes you need to stimulate your intellect.
Having something all your own that boosts both brain power and self-confidence, while generating an income, is a worthy goal. It’s something I wanted as a young mother. That’s why an affiliate marketing business is perfect for moms looking for something more. You won’t be beholden to anyone but yourself, and you can dedicate as much or as little time that you want on your business.
Plan A Perfect Day
Here’s what a typical day could look like. You get through your morning routine. You’ve deposited the older kids at school, and now all you have to do is put the baby down for a nap. I hope all goes smoothly. I had young kids once too, so I know how each day can be different. If all goes as planned, you’ll have a couple of hours to work on your business.
Soon the baby wakes up, you get the kids from school, and tackle lessons, homework, and dinner. If you’re a smart (or just exhausted) mom, your kids go to bed early. If you’re not too tired, now is a great time to sneak in another hour or two on your business.
At the end of the day, you fall into bed knowing you’ve, not only taken care of your family, but have also invested in your future.
Now do this for years, and watch your return on investment. Sure, you’ll get cranky and tired and frustrated, wishing you had more time, but your efforts will pay off with consistent, sustained effort. Keep building!
For me, this quote sums up entrepreneurship:
The Power Of A Paradigm Shift
Changing Our Thinking Patterns
Have you ever wondered if society has it backwards? Instead of working 40-50 hours a week with little time left over for anything else, what if we switched paradigms, and had more time for what really nourishes us?
How wonderful it would be to have more time to devote to your health, your family, and your hobbies. Or better yet, time to do nothing at all if you want. To work deliberately for a few hours, accomplish your given tasks, and call it a day. And what would you give to be caught up on all that is required of you? To not have that nagging list with tasks that never seem to get checked off.
Imagine working from home, setting your own schedule, and not having to be accountable to anyone but yourself. Work hard for a few hours, then indulge in whatever makes you happy, knowing you’re making passive income while you play!
Science concurs with me. Many great people in history were discretionary with their time. Charles Darwin worked four hours daily with three hours in the morning and an hour later in the day. Look what he accomplished? I love this anecdote from the life of mathematician G. H. Hardy. Apparently, he worked no more than fours every morning, filling his afternoons with cricket and tennis. He stated that his best ideas came to him during his leisure hours. What can we learn from this?
Now don’t misunderstand me. I’ve been known to work eight to ten hours some days at my internet business. The difference between this, and working for someone else, though, is I choose my hours, varying it from day to day. And my business is something I’m passionate about so it seems more like play than work, and rarely am I at it more than three or four hours at a time with taking a long break.
40 Hour Work Week
Is the 40-hour work week still relevant today? A function of the Industrial Revolution, it was meant to cut down on the number of hours factory workers would perform manual labor. It was a good thing at the time, however in today’s society, I think it’s time for a new approach.
Does your brain function well working for eight hours straight, day after day? Mine sure doesn’t. I’m not wired that way, nor do I think most people are. Of course, everyone is different and will have their own opinion on this subject. Think about it; could the long work days be partly to blame for the rise in heart disease and cancer we’re seeing today? Long work hours equate to less sleep, less time for exercise, and less time for nutritious meals.
Human beings are cyclical creatures. Our brains are wired to focus our attention on a task for approximately 90-120 minutes at one time. We then need diversion to muster the motivation to complete our next tasks. That’s what I love about working from home. I’ll work for an hour or two, and then go exercise, eat lunch, throw in a load of laundry, or play with the dogs. Who knows, I may even pull a few weeds to keep my flower beds looking nice. I function well this way.
And who’s to say that working efficiently and effectively for a few hours a day isn’t more productive than working an eight-hour stretch. It’s more about energy than time. Isn’t four hours of hard focus better that four hours of focus followed by four hours of endurance?
