Are you a wanna be blogger? Blogging sounds fun, and you’d like to make some money, but you don’t quite know how to begin? In this post, I’ll cover some tips on how to start a blog for profit in 7 steps!
The word “blog” is a combination of the words “web” and “log.” So a blog is a log, or a journal of sorts, that is online and shared with others. The concept is pretty simple. But what’s the first step?

How To Start A Blog For Profit Step-By-Step
Here are some steps to get you started:
1. What Type Of Blogger Are You?
First you need to determine what kind of blog you’d like to start. Perhaps, a personal blog suits your needs, and is the perfect platform to document your experiences and show pictures of your kids. A blog of this type is a good way to let your personality shine, giving others insight into your life. Your main objective is not necessarily to make money, but just have some fun.
If your goal is to generate income, consider starting a niche or special-interest blog. A niche is a targeted segment of the population in which to market your products and/or services, and is based off a special interest you have, an area of expertise, or even something you’d like to learn more about.

There are literally thousands of niche ideas to choose from. For instance, if you’re an avid seamstress, love dogs, or make wine, these are all great niches. Your blog would be the perfect platform to share tips and tricks of your trade and invite reader interaction.
You can sell products related to your niche. If you’re in the health niche, you could promote supplements, natural remedies, and provide info on how to live a healthy lifestyle. You could also sell health-coaching services if that’s what you’re into. The sky’s the limit when deciding upon a niche. You must be passionate about it, however, as your motivation will wane pretty quickly if you aren’t.

2. Choose A Domain Name For Your Website
It’s exciting to choose a domain name that corresponds to your niche. Choose well because you’ll be saying it a lot, your brand will be based off it, and it’s how people will find your website. Here are some guidelines to follow when selecting a name:
- Ideally, you want to keep your domain name under five words or less. The more wordy it is, the harder it will be to remember, and the higher the likelihood of spelling errors.
- If your domain is catchy, people are more likely to remember it.
- .coms are the best extension because they’re the default, making them easier to remember.
- Your domain name needs to make sense. This goes without saying.
- Avoid slang words and words that have multiple spellings.
- Make it unique and different from other related domains.
- Obviously, it needs to be relevant to your niche to avoid confusion.
3. Build Your Website
You’ll now need to choose a website platform on which to build your site. I use WordPress so that’s what I’ll be discussing in this post. I like it because it’s free, and its dashboard is fairly intuitive to use. Here are some other benefits:
- WordPress is free to use, although you will have to purchase a domain name, but that won’t put you back more than 15 bucks a year.
- There are hundreds of free themes to choose from. You can purchase a premium theme, as well.
- The plug-in selection is simply staggering. Plug-ins help to customize your site.
- It supports search engine optimization. This is a big deal because you want Google, Bing, and Yahoo to be able to find your site.
- Whether your site is an eCommerce site, a visual site like a photography or art site, or simply a blog, WordPress has you covered.
- It’s fun to customize your site just how you want it. Add images, graphics, and videos to give your articles and homepage visual appeal.
4. Create High Quality Content
Blogging, which is essentially creating content, is what you’ll be doing a lot of if you want to be a blogger. It will be hard at first, but writing definitely gets easier with time and practice. You’ll get the hang of it and become more comfortable with the writing process over time.

Always remember that your content needs to be relevant to your niche. This will help to build your brand and grow your business. Create helpful information that meets a need or solves a problem your target audience is facing. This is how you build trust, and position yourself as an expert in your field. Overtime, we begin to trust people we follow who provide beneficial information.
Write a weekly blog post that’s ideally around 1,000 words. Google likes long-form posts and they’re also good for search engine optimization. Content is the means by which Google finds and ranks your site. Encourage interaction from your readers by inviting them to leave a question or comment below your post. This shows social engagement, while also adding word count to your article.
Be sure to reply to all your comments. This sends a clear message to your website visitors that you’re invested in them and your business. Beneath each of your posts, include a specific Call-to-Action. This is simply asking your audience to do something: “Click here to sign up for my weekly posts,” “Please leave a comment below,” or “Visit this page to sign up for my free eCourse.”
5. Find Affiliate Products To Promote
Affiliate marketing, is at its simplest, an arrangement between an affiliate (you), and an online merchant. You promote the merchant’s products and receive a commission for doing so. There are many merchants to choose from. I think using an affiliate marketing network is the most convenient because all your merchants are in one spot and easy to access.

You can also apply to individual merchant programs. Begin by finding merchants that have products relevant to your niche, then apply to their programs. Some will accept you, others won’t. Don’t be offended if you’re declined. It happens to all of us so try not to take it personally.
Affiliate Networks
Here are some affiliate networks you can join:
1. ShareASale
2. CJ Affiliate
3. Rakuten
4. FlexOffers
6. ClickBank
6. Marketing Your Business Using Social Media
Share and then share some more. Make sure large groups of people have access to your articles, the goal being that those people will then share your content with their followers. It’s all about exposure, building your brand, and getting people to visit your website, read your content, and click on your affiliate links.
Everyone wins in this scenario – the merchants whom you’re promoting and yourself, because you’ll receive a commission each time a link’s clicked, and your readers because they get to read your free content. It really is a great system. Let social media do some of the heavy lifting for you.
There are a variety of automation tools you can use to automate your posting and pinning, which are great time-savers, and many of them you can use for free, or at the very least they offer a free trial. Click HERE, HERE, and HERE to check them out.
7. The Three Steps To Success
Keep repeating steps four, five, and six. Once you’ve determined your niche, chosen a domain name, and have your website up and running, the next step is to consistently create content, and share it on social media. It’s now just a matter of writing, promoting, and sharing. Repeat these steps for months and years. And don’t forget to re-purpose your post popular content.
It takes at least a year to start seeing profit from affiliate marketing. Patience and consistency are key. There will be days when you want to quit because the money isn’t coming it. Please don’t! Success may be just around the corner. Choose one day out of your week to write a compelling blog post, then add affiliate links and share it to all your social media platforms. This entire process takes effort, but it’s worth the time and work required. You can do it…
