How To Find A Domain Name The EASY Way

A domain name is like having your own piece of real estate. And just like real estate, the value increases over time. Choosing a domain name for your website doesn’t have to be stressful or time-consuming. It’s actually pretty fun! Your domain name will be an important part of your brand going forward so make sure it reflects who you are, what you’re selling, or what your brand represents. Here’s some tips on how to find a domain name the easy way.

How To Select A Domain Name

Now that you’ve selected your niche, it’s time to choose a domain name for your site. Invest some time and do some digging around. Find out domain names competitors’ in your same niche are using, and what kind of traffic their sites are getting. Of course, you don’t want to steal anything, but it could get your imagination working.

Also, do a little keyword research. Come up with a list of 5-7 keywords you would potentially like to be in your domain name. Then enter those keywords into your keyword tool. Ideally, these should be keywords you anticipate people typing into Google when they’re searching for your products or services.

My favorite keyword research tool is Jaaxy. You can read my review below. Keyword tools are necessary to see how much traffic a particular keyword is generating, and the nature of the competition. You want to hit the sweet spot of some competition but not too much.

You’ll want your domain name to reflect your niche so when people hear it, it’s immediately apparent what your site is about. Once you’ve selected your keywords, you can use a free domain name generator to analyze results. Keywords in your domain name aren’t necessarily important for SEO. Make sure your domain name makes sense.

Factors To Consider When Choosing A Domain Name

  • It should be easy to remember
  • Make it relevant to your niche – www.dogtraining.com is not relevant if your site teaches cooking classes
  • Avoid using slang words like “u” instead of “you”
  • Buy a .com extension – they tend to rank the best
  • Consider using your name – the more simple your domain name, the easier it will be to remember
  • Make it catchy – it’s more memorable
  • Keep it short and simple – there’s less of a chance of spelling errors
  • Avoid symbols in your name, such as, hyphens or numbers – this can be confusing for people
  • Don’t consider a domain that is too similar to other domain names
  • Select a name that makes sense – people won’t remember it if it doesn’t
  • Avoid words that have multiple spellings

If you have your heart set on a name, but it isn’t available, try tweaking it by adding an adjective or verb before or after your chosen word. Do make it original though, and not too close to other domains out there. Use tools such as dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias to spark you imagination and creativity.

Where To Purchase Domain Names

I purchase my domain names through Wealthy Affiliate. Other domain registrars include GoDaddy and Namecheap. A domain will cost you approximately $11.99 a year with the option to own it for up to ten years.

You can add privacy protection for your domain for an additional $7.99 a year, which keeps your personal information on your website private, preventing domain-related spam. You can also add an email address that matches your domain for a nominal monthly price.

  1. Hi, Holly, I did this while looking for my first domain name. I wanted to place what my niche was about within the domain text, as you statedto make it easy to remember. I wanted my target audience to know exactly what they were getting when coming to my site, and that I would continue to deliver to them what they were looking for.

Thus far, I’ve seen decent rankings in the search engines, plus better yet, click through rates have gone up. It all begins with the domain, and the easier and more memorable it is, the more traffic will follow.

    • Hi Todd,

You’re right, the domain name should reflect the niche so visitors know what the website’s focus is that they’re visiting. I try to do that as well.

I’m glad you’re seeing ranking and that your click through rates have increased. Good for you. Your domain must be a good one.

Thank you for reading my article and taking the time to comment!

  2. Domain names? Yes it is like a piece of real estate for sure.  Trying to find the best domain name is a very tough thing to do. It is so important to select correctly. You want it to be all the things you listed, catchy, and memorable. I have not purchased my name domain yet, but I think that is kind of a cool thing as well. Great job.

    • Thank you Coralie,

Finding just the right domain name can be tricky. As long as it reflects your niche, and is easy to say and remember, you’ve most likely got yourself a winner! You’ll know when you land on the perfect one.

  3. Very important topic here, thank you for a thorough post. A domain name is like real estate and sometimes there are diamonds in the rough out there.

Researching keywords is a great idea and you’ve referenced a great product in Jaaxy. I appreciate you listing these free domain name generator links as I have not heard of most of these and will definitely be checking them out.

Godaddy sometimes offers a domain name for $.99 for a year, but these promos are limited and otherwise I like Wealthy Affiliate too. This is a great post on domain names and I’m looking forward to reading more of them!

    • Isn’t the internet amazing and that we even get to have our own websites in the first place?!

Jaazy is my go-to keyword research tool. I use it every day for each post I write. The free domain name generators are great for brainstorming domains. They’re fun to play around with and you can come up with some names you otherwise wouldn’t.

I didn’t know GoDaddy offered domains for that cheap. I used to buy my domains and website hosting through them before I found Wealthy Affiliate whose hosting is second to none. And I like that it’s one-stop shopping, and I can purchase my domains through them as well.

      Thanks for reading my post.

  4. I think it’s a bit tricky when using your own name as a domain. It doesn’t really give an idea what the niche is all about and people might not make that connection easily with your site. If you are truly committed to building the blog, your name can become very popular. If the result turns out to be otherwise, it can be kind of embarrassing – if you know what I mean.

I rather go for a keyword rich domain. It just makes more sense, plus there’s a ranking factor there too.

    • Hi Cathy,

I agree, it will depend on your niche whether you want to use your own name or not since people may not make the connection. Thanks for making that point.

And yes, keyword rich domains are great ranking factor. I appreciate your comment.
