How To Grow Your List

The success of your email marketing campaign is based on a number of factors. Effectively manage these techniques to ensure an optimal outcome. When developing your next email campaign, consider the following guidelines:

1. Your list

Certainly one of the most important aspects of any email marketing campaign is your list. This list is directly correlated to your success. Ask yourself these questions: Are the names on your list recent? Do you have permission to market to these people?

Have they shown an interest in products or services similar to your own? Make sure that you’re using a house list – meaning names you have collected on your own in order to grow your email list.

2. Your subject line

Getting a subscriber to open your message is the first step in any email marketing campaign. Focus on your subject line, and develop a test to determine which subject lines work best.

Divide your emails into three random, yet equal groups. Next, measure the response each email generates. Use the one producing the highest results as your control. Then, in your follow-up emails, try to exceed the response rate of this control email.

3. Your sender information

Next determine what information should appear on the sender line of your email? Will your prospects recognize it? Will they want to hear from you? Emails are often deleted, without ever being opened, because the sender name is not recognizable. Your sender name should be brief and easily understood.

4. Track your results

Track your results – this will provide insights into who is opening your messages. It will also help you assess which links are being clicked. Determine what is working, and what isn’t, so you can repeat the process in your next campaign. Tracking is particularly important when testing subject lines, embedded links, and other direct-response vehicles.

5. Make sure your unsubscribe method is in place and working

The CAN-SPAM act of 2003 requires that all email messages contain clear directions on how to opt-out from subsequent mailings. Include an unsubscribe button that allows those on your list to opt-out from receiving future emails from you. It is in your best interest to remove anyone from your list that no longer wants to receive emails.

6. Your images are correctly referenced and you’ve used alt tags in each image

Double check to make sure any links attached to your images are working properly. Include alt tags on all images. These “alternative text” tags describe the appearance and function of an image, and will be displayed if an image fails to load.

They’re useful, as well, for those who are visually impaired as it enables them to “read” the alt text to determine the nature of the image. Alt tags are also important for indexing and search engine optimization.

7. Test, Test, Test

Follow these guidelines if you’re just starting out in the email marketing world. The key to success is to test, test, test – then you can determine what is working, and what isn’t.

Measure who is opening your emails, the click-through-rates, and purchase history. What subject line did you use? What was unique about the content? Document all successful results in order to duplicate them in future campaigns.

  1. I don’t have much experience or know a lot about email marketing.  I know that I need to get into it in the future. Your article has been helpful in providing some of the basics.

Your article was very easy to read and each section was short and to the point, so I did not get bored reading it.  I am not sure what else to say about the topic as I really have not started doing this yet.

  2. You must have read my mind before writing this post.  I need to get an email marketing system in place, and have no idea how to go about it.  Your 7-step list is quite a nice start.  I’ve taken some notes; written all the topics and some info to help me remember what they were about.  Now perhaps I can get started.

Do you recommend a company to use as autoresponder?  (Hope that’s the right term)…like AWeber?  Who do you use, or who do you recommend?  Pretty bad, when I’m not even sure what to call it. I need what you are teaching!  Thanks.

    • Hi Fran,

I’m glad you found some useful information in my article. I hope following these steps will make the process easier for you.

Aweber and Mailchimp are both good autoresponders you can use. I’ve used both. Check out Aweber here and Mailchimp here.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

  3. Thank you very much for explaining email marketing strategies.  I’ve recently just started my email marketing campaigns with Mailchimp. The results in the beginning aren’t very good (maybe because I only have a few subscribers).

I don’t know if testing is really worth it in the beginning, but I will try it. If you have another article about how to do email marketing testing, please let me know here. Thank you.

    • Hello,

Thanks so much for your comment. Mailchimp is a good autoresponder. Just keep doing what you’re doing, it will take time to build your list. I do have a review post on my site about AWeber. You can read it here. You might find the information useful.
